National Veterans Art Museum Celebrates International Women's Day With Women Veterans Exhibit

NATIONAL VETERANS ART MUSEUM CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY WITH WOMEN VETERANS ART EXHIBITION

Overlooked / Looked Over features work based on artists' experience as women in the military

Iris M. Feliciano
(un)clothed and in her right mind - Iris M. Feliciano

Chicago, Ill. (February 2012) – On Saturday, March 10, 2012, the National Veterans Art Museum (NVAM) will host the opening of Overlooked / Looked Over, a new exhibit featuring work by eight women artists who are veterans of the U.S. military. Admission to the NVAM will be free all day with light refreshments offered from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Artist and curator talks will take place between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.

The show's opening is timed to coincide with the centenary anniversary of International Women's Day. Annually on March 8, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements. All around the world, women are connected by activities ranging from business conferences and networking events to local women's craft markets and theatric performances. The exhibit also highlights National Women's History Month.

Overlooked / Looked Over responds to the growth in numbers of women joining the military, which has soared over the past decade. Iraq War veteran and curator Erica Slone notes that women currently comprise 14.5% of active duty military and there are 1.8 million women veterans; yet there has been little research to date on how contemporary military culture and war affects women. "Through Overlooked/Looked Over," Slone says, "I intend to shine a light on the unique experiences of women during service, in war, and as veterans."

Emily Yates
Self-Portrait - Emily Yates

According to Slone, the concept for Overlooked / Looked Over is taken from a quote by the late American actress and sex symbol Mae West, "I'd rather be looked over than overlooked." Slone states, "Depending on one's own definition of feminism, Mae West could be either the quintessential feminist or anti-feminist. Her statement, however, presents a false dichotomy of attitudes about women, and the coexistence of these polar attitudes toward women is exacerbated within our armed forces."

Artists in the show include Victoria Robillard Bryers, a retired veteran with thirty years service in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves; Iris M. Feliciano, a Marine Corps veteran; Maggie Martin, an Army veteran and field organizer with Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW); Robynn Murray, an Army veteran and subject of the documentary film Poster Girl; Joyce Wagner, a Marine veteran and board chair of IVAW; Emily Yates, an Army veteran; Regina Vasquez, a Marine Corps Veteran and founder and executive director of the Fatigues Clothesline Project; and curator Erica Slone, an Air Force veteran.

The opening reception on March 10 is proudly co-sponsored by the Chicago Women's Caucus for Art and the Chicago Chapter of The Transition Network.

The show will be open to the public from Wednesday, February 29, 2012 through Memorial Day 2012. For more information, visit the museum's website at www.nvam.org.

More on Avoid These Pay to Play

Artists are getting emails from the Brick Lane Gallery in London. The writer says she "stumbled across" the artist's work on the ". . . . website and was really impressed with your work. "

The advantages are that you get to see your work outside of your studio and having it on your resume will impress your co-workers and relatives who don't know anything about art. The disadvantages include: having it on your resume will negatively impress those who do know something about art -- the real dealers and collectors -- and in fact will often be the kiss of death; it will cost you a lot; and the odds of your selling enough to meet your expenses are terrible (real collectors steer clear of such places although tourists may not know any better).

There are programs which can search the Web to find art-related sites and copy all the email addresses. Brick certainly used one of those (although a human with very low salary requirements could do it by hand) and then sent everyone the same email.

Avoid These Pay to Play Art Galleries & Venues

Artists often find out about these offers through various forms of advertising, particularly mass emailings. The more agressive senders relentlessly bombard artists with emails and sometimes even contact them directly by phone. Costs to participate can range anywhere from under $100 to thousands of dollars, especially if you factor in incidental expenses like shipping, travel, insurance or accomodations. Whatever the circumstance, make sure you are aware of all costs and potential benefits or drawbacks in advance. Does everyone benefit... or is it more like you pay, they play? Here is a partial list, in no particular order, of publications, venues, and other situations where you have to pay to expose your art, and that you should fully research-- before you pay-- in order to understand exactly what you're getting for your money:

GENERAL RULE, don't pay to exhibit, exceptions quality juried shows at recognized venues, and shared rentals at established venues.

Jeanine Hill-Soldner Exhibits "Portraits of American Veterans" at Northern Trust Bank in Chicago

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

GROUNDBREAKING EXHIBIT BRINGS ART BY VETERANS TOGETHER WITH PAINTINGS AND STORIES ABOUT VETERANS

Exhibit at Northern Trust Bank Showcases Artwork from the National Veterans Art Museum and Portraits by Jeanine Hill-Soldner

Chicago, Ill. (July 2011) – As part of a renewed emphasis on local outreach, the National Veterans Art Museum (NVAM) is proud to announce it is part of Northern Trust Bank’s new patriotism-themed art exhibit. The exhibit, entitled “Honoring and Remembering,” is located at 50 S. LaSalle Street and will run until August 29th.

The exhibit features nearly 30 pieces of art from the National Veterans Art Museum’s collection by veterans of the Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq Wars. In addition to pieces from the Museum’s collection, there are an additional 15 portraits of veterans by NVAM collaborator Jeanine Hill-Soldner. Highlights of the exhibit include Charles Salerno’s “Honoring and Remembering,” Charlie Shobe’s “Jungle Boots,” Laszlo Kondor’s “Xmas Party,” an untitled piece from Ash Kyrie’s “Transfers From War” series, digital prints by Jessica Ross and selections from Hill-Soldner’s “Portraits of American Veterans Project.”

“We are grateful to the Northern Trust Bank for the opportunity to share the art in our collection with a wider audience. This exhibit allows us to increase the exposure to our collection beyond just on our website and at our South Loop facility,” said NVAM Executive Director Levi Moore. The Museum’s website is www.NVAM.org and is physically located at 1801 S. Indiana Avenue. Moore added, “what is truly unique about this show is that it puts the art in our collection, which is inspired by veterans’ combat experiences, into dialogue with Jeanine Hill-Soldner’s portraits of veterans. Not only do viewers get to see the veterans’ art, but they also get to see an artist’s perspective of veterans. This is the type of project we want to promote to our supporters who we hope will assist us in remaining in Chicago.” The Museum is currently raising funds to move to a new facility in 2012.

The Northern Trust Bank “Honoring and Remembering” exhibit is free and open to the public during regular bank hours. For more information, call 312-630-6000 or visit www.nvam.org.
